The way one communicates with differing people is important. Telling a story to a close friend should sound vastly different than telling the same story to family members. The diction, the syntax, and even the tone of voice could differ. Likewise, discussing something with a boss or anyone that is more superior needs to be more professional with little to no slang and appropriate word choice. Body language connects to the professionalism as well. For example, telling a story with an exaggerated facial expression and arms flailing around is acceptable for friends. However, if you attempted to do this in front of a boss, the circumstances would not be favorable.

Between friends and acquaintances, the conversation and the emotions are more relaxed. With family members, both areas are still relaxed; however, there is a fine line that cannot be crossed when discussing certain things with parents. The parent can yell at the child and talk with an argumentative tone, but the child cannot do either of these things. In a professional environment, both parties should be respecting of each other and act professionally. However, if the discussion is between a boss and an employee, the boss has more freedom to say whatever as long as it is respectable.

When discussing anything with my mentor, I will be professional and keep good eye contact. I will not assume that I am allowed to walk in and sit down without explicitly being told that I am allowed to. I will smile and attempt to keep a calm, yet strong posture throughout. I will listen to everything that is said and ask any questions if needed. If there is anything that i forget to ask, I will send a professsionally written email.
